Keynote: Hope in Action: Creating and Sustaining Liberatory Education Spaces
Cierra Kaler-Jones, Ph.D.

Cierra Kaler-Jones, Ph.D., is an educator, researcher, cultural organizer, and artist. She serves as the first-ever Executive Director of Rethinking Schools. Over the past decade, Dr. Kaler-Jones has learned alongside preschoolers, K-12 students, college students, and adults as a community-based educator and university faculty member. With her roots in dance and arts education, she has also taught classes on U.S. history, public policy, social change and leadership, storytelling for change, digital literacy, and writing. Her work is deeply informed by her background as a trained dancer and teaching artist, integrating arts-based practices into her approach to education and activism. She's traveled the U.S., leading professional development for universities and school districts. As a researcher, her work has been published in journals such as Girlhood Studies, Middle School Journal, The Urban Review, Journal Committed to Social Change on Race and Ethnicity (JSCORE), Rethinking Schools magazine, and Frontiers in Education. She received her Ph.D. in education from the University of Maryland – College Park. In 2022, she was named to Black Enterprise's 40 Under 40 list for her social impact work.

Despite this truth, school professionals encounter many barriers to collaborating with other professionals to support students with challenging behavior (Squires et. al., 2024). This session will use research to help attendees develop an action plan for collaborating with other professionals to support students with challenging behavior.
